Third-Party Lab Testing

Third-party lab testing is when a product is analyzed by an independent laboratory that has no financial stake in the brand. The "first party" is the manufacturer and the "second party" is the buyer; the third party is a neutral lab whose job is simply to report what it finds. The results are usually summarized in a certificate of analysis (COA).

What labs typically test for

• Identity: confirming the ingredient is what the label says, for example using chemical fingerprinting or DNA methods for mushroom species.
• Composition: measuring specific components, such as beta-glucans versus starch in a mushroom extract.
• Heavy metals: lead, arsenic, cadmium and mercury, which fungi and plants can absorb from soil or growing media.
• Microbial safety: yeast, mold and bacteria such as E. coli and Salmonella.
• Pesticide residues and, for some products, allergens.

Signs of a credible lab

Look for a lab accredited to the ISO/IEC 17025 standard, the international benchmark for testing laboratories. Accreditation means the lab's methods and quality systems are regularly audited by an outside body. A reputable report names the lab, its accreditation and the test methods used.

What shoppers generally look for

1. Results that match a specific batch number, not a generic sample.
2. A recent test date.
3. Clear pass/fail results against stated limits.
4. A way to verify the report directly with the lab.
